Turkish folk dance is also very alive and variant. Each region has its characteristic dance with particular costumes, steps, rhythms and instruments. Every region's dance reflects the characteristics of that region's people. Turkish people are very inventive, creating new dances for different situations.

FOUR TRADITIONS OF THEATRE IN TURKEY

Theatrical art in Turkey is currently believed to have developed from the same religious, moral and educational urge to imitate human actions that accompanied its growth in other countries, particularly in ancient Greece. The puppet shadow play, which involves two-dimensional puppets (figures) casting its shadow on a two-dimensional area of screen, had an important place in Turkey as well as throughout the larger area of the Ottoman Empire. To understand its place let us glance at four main traditions of theatre in Turkey. These are the “folk theatre tradition”, the “popular theatre tradition - shadow play (karagoz), storyteller”, the “court theatre tradition”, and the “western theatre tradition”. In order to understand the significance of Turkish puppets shadow play, these deserve special brief study.


Turkish Baths (Hamams)



Almost anywhere you go in Turkey, you will find at least one Turkish Bath. The historical Baths built by the Sultans were made of marble. They were fine pieces of rich and ornamental architecture. Today what you find in the cities are more functional Baths, but they are a novel experience nonetheles.

Dervish


A Dervish is a Muslim religious man who is undergoing an apprenticeship of learning the profession that will bestow him with eternal livelihood. Whirling is one of the various methods, which is used by the Sufis (Islamic ascetics) to get closer to their revered Allah (God). Whirling Dervishes perform near the Mevlevi Museum in Konya in the annual Mevlana festival - the largest festival in Turkey. The Mevlevi or Mevleviye is the most renowned Sufi order, which was founded by Celaleddin Mevlana Rumi in 1273 and most of the whirling Dervishes in Turkey come from this faith. So if you are visiting Turkey, do not forget to visit the Mevlevi museum/shrine in Konya. It not only houses the tombs of prominent Dervishes but you can also see the live act of the whirling Dervishes who perform near it. Do not miss it because it is going to be the experience of a lifetime.

On the way to Anatolia they have interacted with chinese, indian, middle eastern, European and Anatolian civilizations, and today`s Turkish culture carries motives from each one of these diverse cultures.
